History of Bytom

In 1708 Jews without right of domicile in Bytom were expelled, those who remained being mainly taxfarmers.

In 1921, during Upper Silesian plebiscite, the majority of the city’s inhabitants voted for Bytom joining to Germany.

In 1932 the community maintained a synagogue, an elementary and a religious school, and benevolent and cultural organizations.

In 1945 around 40% of the town was destroyed, however, the central marketplace with many historical monuments, such as the iconic Town Hall, remained intact.
