Overview of Diamond

  • Diamonds eventually spread throughout the world, even though India had remained the only major source of the gemstone until diamonds were discovered in Brazil in 1725.[8] A Chinese work from the 3rd century BC mentions: “Foreigners wear it [diamond] in the belief that it can ward off evil influences”.[10] The Chinese, who did not find diamonds in their country, initially did not use diamond as a jewel but used it as a “jade cutting knife”.[10] Diamonds reached ancient Rome from India.[7] Diamonds were also discovered in 700 in Borneo, and were used by the traders of southeast Asia.[7]

  • Diamonds are embedded in drill tips or saw blades, or ground into a powder for use in grinding and polishing applications.[121] Specialized applications include use in laboratories as containment for high pressure experiments (see diamond anvil cell), high-performance bearings, and limited use in specialized windows.[122][123] With the continuing advances in the production of synthetic diamonds, new applications are becoming feasible.

    History of Diamond

  • In 1722, René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur demonstrated that iron was transformed into steel through the absorption of some substance, now known to be carbon.[100] In 1772, Antoine Lavoisier showed that diamonds are a form of carbon; when he burned samples of charcoal and diamond and found that neither produced any water and that both released the same amount of carbon dioxide per gram.
  • In 1779,[101] Carl Wilhelm Scheele showed that graphite, which had been thought of as a form of lead, was instead identical with charcoal but with a small admixture of iron, and that it gave “aerial acid” (his name for carbon dioxide) when oxidized with nitric acid.[102] In 1786, the French scientists Claude Louis Berthollet, Gaspard Monge and C.
