IOWN comprises three main technology components: “allphotonics network” that uses optical processing on not only networks but also device processing; “digital twin computing” that enables high-speed, realtime interaction between things and people in cyberspace; and Cognitive Foundation®, in which these and various other ICT resources are efficiently managed.

IOWN GF’s objective is to accelerate innovation and adoption of a new communication infrastructure to meet our future data and computing requirements through the development of new technologies, frameworks, specifications and reference design in areas which include Photonics R&D, Distributed Connected Computing and Use Cases and Best Practices.

IOWN GF is a non-profit international organization that was set up in January 2020 by founding members NTT Corporation (NTT), Intel Corporation and Sony Corporation, in order to promote the implementation in society of IOWN next-generation communications infrastructure, which will utilize cutting-edge optical technologies.

IOWN will shift from the world of electronics to the world of photonics, with IOWN NTT striving to realize an innovative network with excellent capacity, low latency, flexibility, and energy efficiency, which is based on photonic technology down to the level of information processing.

History of iOWN

In 2019, NTT announced a new type of network infrastructure called IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network)*1 founded upon the company’s insight from its previous research and development initiatives.President and Chief Executive Officer Jun Sawada commented:”We seek to offer the All-Photonics Network as a new type of network technology in addition to the 11 focus fields*2 at NTT, including AI, VR/AR, and human-machine interfaces.”
