Overview of Komodo

Komodo dragons were first documented by Europeans in 1910, when rumors of a “land crocodile” reached Lieutenant van Steyn van Hensbroek of the Dutch colonial administration.[4] Widespread notoriety came after 1912, when Peter Ouwens, the director of the Zoological Museum at Bogor, Java, published a paper on the topic after receiving a photo and a skin from the lieutenant, as well as two other specimens from a collector.[3]

Komodo Island is included on most day trips/Komodo tours from Labuan Bajo and is home to over 3,000 dragons and offers 4 alternative trekking routes (short, medium, long & adventure) with the shortest taking less than an hour and the longest (adventure trek) up to 4 hours.

Regulation

Realizing the significance of the dragons on Komodo Island as an endangered species, the Dutch government issued a regulation on the protection of the lizards on Komodo Island in 1915.The expedition managed to kill one of the creatures that were taken for dragons.The lizard that was later named the Komodo dragon (or the Komodo monitor) was carefully studied on Java Island.  These records are the first documentary evidence of this species.
