Overview of Maecenas

Maecenas died in 8 BC, about halfway through the
long reign of Octavian, and, in the final account, Maecenas showed that
he reciprocated Octavian’s respect by bequeathing to Octavian all of
his
considerable wealth, including a grand villa on the Esquiline Hill
where,
in a specially built auditorium, members of the circle had entertained
their friend and patron, Maecenas, and his guests.

Maecenas was also famed for literary patronage and criticism of poetry.Horace's Epodes, Satires, Odes, and Epistles are dedicated to Maecenas, as well as Vergil's Georgics, which were undertaken at his request.Maecenas himself wrote both prose and poetry, of which only fragments survive.Upon his death Maecenas bequeathed his property to Augustus.

Maecenas’ insistence on
expressive
freedom for his circle of artists and authors (and a romored
liaison  between Octavian and Terentia, the wife of Maecenas)
eventually led to a few strain in the relationship of Maecenas with
Octavian, but he always retained the respect and
trust of the emperor.

Maecenas was the archetype of
wealthy,
generous patrons of the arts, and his name is still memorialized in
numerous
organizations and events that patronize the arts (the Pittsburgh Opera,
for example, has an annual “Maecenas” fund raiser).

Maecenas’s reputation as a generous patron makes him the object of comparison to the “unfortunates with money and no work, whose haunts lie in the dilettante line” and who had nothing better to do than commission a statue from a few artist.

Maecenas sited his famous gardens, the first gardens in the Hellenistic-Persian garden style in Rome,[citation needed] on the Esquiline Hill, atop the Servian Wall and its adjoining necropolis, near the gardens of Lamia.

Maecenas is a marketplace that allows anyone to purchase fractional interests in great works of art, using the ease and efficiency of blockchain technology, and the same crypto security used by the world’s leading banks.

Maecenas endeavoured also to divert the less masculine genius of Propertius from harping continually on his love to themes of public interest, an effort which to a few extent backfired in the ironic elegies of Book III.

Maecenas felt that, though a knight (slightly humbler than a senator but basically a nonpolitical member of the privileged class), his lineage and power overtopped any senator’s, and he refused a career as one.

Maecenas, the Horatius’ patron, came from a wealthy equestrian family, but describing such background as kings (reges) sounds tasteless to me — but I may be missing a connotation of the word rex.

Blockchain

(If you’re not familiar with that space yet, check out my primer from earlier this year.)On Wednesday, art investment startup Maecenas opened online registration to participate in an event it is billing as “the world’s first ever blockchain-based auction of fine art.” But in my opinion, slicing into the details lays bare a number of deficiencies that also apply to much of the overheated art and blockchain space.

In fact, despite the overtures made to “decentralized networks of trust” and the exclusionary inefficiencies of the traditional art industry, reliance on established art-world and business-world institutions runs rampant through Maecenas’s pitch.

Support

He supported Virgil who wrote the Georgics in his honour.Indeed, Horace begins the first poem of his Odes (Odes I.i) by addressing his new patron.It was Virgil, impressed with examples of Horace’s poetry, who introduced Horace to Maecenas.Maecenas gave him full financial support as well as an estate in the Sabine Mountains.Maecenas is most famous for his support of young poets, hence his name has become the eponym for a “patron of arts”.Propertius and the minor poets Varius Rufus, Plotius Tucca, Valgius Rufus, and Domitius Marsus also were his protégés.

Although the ancient Roman Gaius Maecenas was a well-known diplomat and counselor to Emperor Augustus, it was his munificent patronage of literature that immortalized his name as a word for “a generous patron.” A writer himself, Maecenas knew of the power of poetry and viewed it as a way to glorify Augustus’s regime.Among the poets he patronized were the celebrated Virgil and Horace – both of whom he befriended.Maecenas has also been credited with encouraging both writers to focus more on topics of public interest, such as affairs of state.

History of Maecenas

In 1806 Beaumont lent Distant View of Maecenas’ Villa, Tivoli to the British Institution so that young artists could copy it (The Diary of Joseph Farington, vol.8, p.2834).

In 1828, Beaumont presented the picture, together with fifteen others from his collection, to the newly founded National Gallery.

In 1874, as work to widen via Merulana and create the Largo Leopardi was underway, a partially underground structure came to light.

In 2003, Bram founded iGlobe, specializing in ICT-consultancy.

In 2016, Dimitri joined the Maecenas Group partnership.
