Overview of Venus
Venus has been described as perhaps “the most original creation of the Roman pantheon”,[5] and “an ill-defined and assimilative” native goddess, combined “with a strange and exotic Aphrodite”.[6] Her cults may represent the religiously legitimate charm and seduction of the divine by mortals, in contrast to the formal, contractual relations between most members of Rome’s official pantheon and the state, and the unofficial, illicit manipulation of divine forces through magic.[7][8] The ambivalence of her persuasive functions has been perceived in the relationship of the root *wenos- with its Latin derivative venenum (‘poison’; from *wenes-no ‘love drink’ or ‘addicting’),[9] in the sense of “a charm, magic philtre”.[10]
Venus Verticordia was invented in 220 BC, in response to advice from a Sibylline oracle during Rome’s Punic Wars,[50] when a series of prodigies was taken to signify divine displeasure at sexual offenses among Romans of every category and class, including several men and three Vestal Virgins.[51] Her statue was dedicated by a young woman, chosen as the most pudica (sexually pure) in Rome by a committee of Roman matrons.
Venus Victrix (“Venus the Victorious”), a Romanised aspect of the armed Aphrodite that Greeks had inherited from the East, where the goddess Ishtar “remained a goddess of war, and Venus could bring victory to a Sulla or a Caesar.”[32] Pompey, Sulla’s protégé, vied with his patron and with Caesar for public recognition as her protégé.

Vergil’s Aeneas is guided to Latium by Venus in her heavenly form, the morning star, shining brightly before him in the daylight sky; much later, she lifts Caesar’s soul to heaven.[61] In Ovid’s Fasti Venus came to Rome because she “preferred to be worshipped in the city of her own offspring”.[62] In Vergil’s poetic account of Octavian’s victory at the sea-battle of Actium, the future emperor is allied with Venus, Neptune and Minerva.Virgil, in compliment to his patron Augustus and the gens Julia, embellished an existing connection between Venus, whom Julius Caesar had adopted as his protectress, and Aeneas.

What Is Venus?
Venus is the second planet orbiting our Sun in the Solar System.Circling at an average distance of approximately 108 million kilometres (around 67 million miles) from the Sun, it sits between the orbits of Mercury and Earth.

History of Venus
In 1926, the prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley maintained that in the solar system, Venus “more nearly fulfills the conditions [for life] than any planet other than the Earth….
In 1927, Science News-Letter writer Frank Thone surveyed the prospects for life on other planets and declared Venus “the darling of the solar system” (excepting Earth, of course).
In 1967, the Soviet probe Venera 4 not only became the first mission to survive a plunge into Venus’s clouds, it was the first technology to directly analyse the atmosphere of another world.
In 1990, the Magellan spacecraft began orbiting Venus.
In 2006, the Venus Express—a European Space Agency spacecraft designed primarily to study the atmosphere of Venus—went into orbit around the planet.
In 2017 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, or JCMT, the U.K.-led team discovered a feature in the radio emissions from Venus at 266.94 gigahertz.
In 2017, Akatsuki spotted another huge “gravity wave” in Venus’ atmosphere.
In 2020, astronomers discovered a significant abundance of the chemical phosphine high in Venus’ atmosphere.
