Overview of Alaskan Klee Kais

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a relatively new breed that looks like a smaller version of the Siberian Husky, and even the name “Klee Kai” comes from an Inuit term meaning “small dog.” While Alaskan Klee Kais resemble larger Husky breeds, they have a few key differences, especially when it comes to temperament, that distinguish it from its ancestor working class dogs of the north.

The Alaskan Klee Kai is also not a breed that enjoys nor will tolerate being teased, rough handled, mistreated, poked at, pinched, or bullied by children and may respond by nipping or biting at them, unlike the Siberian Husky which is considered to be good with children.  If raised properly with children they seem to make a great dog for the whole family.

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a spitz-type breed of dog, developed in the late 20th century as a companion-sized dog resembling the larger Alaskan Husky and Siberian Husky.[2] it’s an energetic, intelligent dog with an appearance that reflects its northern heritage.

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a small version of a type of dog referred to as the Alaskan Husky, with a wedge-shaped head featuring a striking masked face, prick ears, and a double coat.

Alaskan Klee Kai usually makes a noise that sounds like a “woo-woo.” Other AKK may prefer to howl in a high pitched voice like their Alaskan Husky and Siberian Husky relations.

Alaskan Klee Kai respond especially well to fast-paced, reward-based training games which include "Ready, Set, Down" after they’ve already mastered basic obedience training.

Alaskan Klee Kai were created by an American lady called Linda Spurlin in the 1970s but she didn’t make her dogs available to the public until the late 1980s.

Alaskan Klee Kais are slighter than Shiba Inus, and rarely weigh over 15 pounds (the breed standard indicates that anywhere from 9-15 pounds is acceptable.)

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a clean dog, it will groom itself, it does not like having wet feet and it does not seem to have bad breath or a strong dog smell.

Alaskan Klee Kai come in three alternative sizes: standard (15 to 17 inches), miniature (13 to 15 inches) and toy (up to 13 inches).

While it may sound tempting to create a leggier, calmer dog by breeding the Shiba Inu and the Alaskan Klee Kai together, we’d be better served by learning to appreciate both the Shiba Inu and the Alaskan Klee Kai as two very unique breeds that they are.
