Beagles

Overview of Beagles

  • The beagle is a scent hound, developed primarily for hunting hare. Although beagle-type dogs have existed for 2,500 years, the modern breed was developed in Great Britain around the 1830s. Miniature breeds of beagle-type dogs were known from the times of Edward II and Henry VII, who both had packs of Glove Beagles, so named since they were small enough to fit on a glove, and Queen Elizabeth I kept a breed known as a Pocket Beagle, which stood 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm) at the shoulder.
  • Beagles are small or medium-sized pups that are working dogs and they have an amazing ability to track and smell.  They are often used as tracking dogs to find drugs and weapons at airports.  They are prone to follow their nose, and this instinct is bred into them.  They are intelligent pups but can be uncooperative during training sessions because of their headstrong nature.  They are fantastic with children and tolerate kids of every age.
  • The Beagle is a small to medium size dog, with a short glossy coat, they are very popular for first time owners and families making them one of the most popular dogs in the UK, they make very loyal companions, although part of the hunting family these dogs are kind-natured, outgoing, sweet and always willing to please their owners, the hounds fall into two key categories the ones that hunt by scent and those who hunt by sight.
  • The Beagle is highly prized for his keen hunting ability, making him the ideal companion for Englishmen who enjoyed rabbit or fox hunting as a leisure activity. In earlier times, Beagles were particularly attractive as hunting dogs because of their ability to traverse vast amounts of terrain under their own steam.

Life expectancy

The Beagle can come in various different colour combinations and has a short coat, which requires minimal grooming. Their origins as a scent hound mean they can be prone to distraction if they latch onto an interesting smell but with proper training they can be obedient. There are some inherited conditions that can affect the Beagle, although testing is in place for some of these and on the whole the breed is fairly healthy with a reasonably long life expectancy of around 12 – 15 years.

Training

The so called Frengle hybrid is a mixed dog, with parents from two different purebreds, in this case a French Bulldog and a Beagle.Being the offspring of parents from two different breeds, with their own temperament, health issues, size and training potential, the results can often be a bit random, taking some things from one parent, and other things from the other.

Barking

One major problem beagles are known for having is barking, if this is not nipped in the bud when they are younger you can find yourself with a very vocal dog, this is why the training needs to be consistent and with someone who can give a beagle time.

Breed

This breed is kind and hardworking, and they love to be praised for a job well done.  These pups can live for up to 16 years and will weigh anywhere from 20 to 35 pound when fully grown.  They are a popular dog to combine with other breeds, and some other popular mixes include the beagle pug mix, the beagle pitbull mix, and the Beagle Dachshund Mix.

Social

Some Beagles can be prone to barking and howling, which can be a problem in urban areas, but again correct training and socialisation from a young age can help to prevent this becoming a habit.

Energy

From properly training your puppy both mentally and physically, the dog will surely grow up into thebrave and expert hunting dog that it is. Taking care of a beagle puppy can be quite interesting and challenging so when taking care of one, there is some important point to note, the beagle puppy has high energy within them, so be extra ready to handle it. Your beagle puppy must be given proper exercise, attention and the mental stimulation it needs.

Health

Beagle dogs are dogs that are quite moderately expensive to purchase, owning one or more of this great breed of dogs requires a lot of expenses, not just the cost of buying but also the cost of feeding and health care. If you are looking for a dog with a spectacular or superior lineage, then be ready to pay a higher price for this breed. The normal price for a beagle ranges from $300 – $1,500. The prices of the beagle dogs vary from the quality of the breed or selecting one with an exceptional breed line can be quite expensive.
