  • In 1968 the FCI approved the first description of this young breed, and in
    1981 breed status was official recognized.
  • In 1981 the BRT was given breed status by the Soviet Ministry of Agriculture.
  • In 1981, the Black Terrier was accepted as a breed by the Russian authorities, and two years later, it gained acceptance by the FCI which established and revised a breed standard in 1996.
  • In 1983 it was recognized by the FCI in the terrier group but it was moved to the working group as it is not really a terrier.
  • In 1992, the Black Terrier was renamed to the Black Russian Terrier (BRT).
  • In 1994 the breed club was formed, The Black Russian Terrier Club of America and in 2004 it was given full recognition by the AKC.
  • In 1996, the AKC listed the Black Russian Terrier with its FSS, and in 2001, the breed was able to compete in the Miscellaneous Class.
  • In 2004, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Black Russian Terrier as a member of the Working Group.

  • In the 1930s, the Black Russian Terrier was created by the Russian military, which crossed multiple breeds to obtain a large, reliable and trainable dog who could endure harsh winters.
