History of Brittanys

• In the 1850s, the Brittany was developed from crossing the French Spaniel with the English Setter.

In 1464 King Matthias I owned this breed.

In 1805, they were featured in the Sporting Magazine, hunting mallards.

In 1850, Reverend Davies wrote of the small hunting dog with a bobtail who could point and retrieve.

In 1891 James De Connick founded the first breed standard for the French Spaniel.

In 1907, the Brittany was first recognized in France as a distinct breed, during which time a breed standard was set.

In 1919 hunters and farmers that bred the Munsterlander formed a club, and the breed has since proven to be an all-purpose gun dog.

In 1921, Father Fournier founded the French Spaniel Club.
