I give the breeding males an Omega 3 fish oil supplement on the recommendation of my specialist.The last male I imported was tested shortly after arrival and the semen was not great.He had successfully bred several litters in the Czech Republic.My Theriogenologist recommended that we put him on Omega 3 and retest in 2 months as sperm regenerates in 2 months.

Diet-wise, what do you feed your Cesky Terriers?

I feed a local kibble which has a combination of chicken lamb and salmon as the protein.It is called TLC Pet Foods in New Hamburg, Ontario.They have a good breeders program and deliver the food to pet homes and to breeders anywhere in North America for free.I have been feeding this for seven years and the dogs have done very well on it.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets?

These pups usually get along rather well with other dogs, but that’s no guarantee; you’ll still want to supervise play between the two animals at first.Also, since Cesky Terriers are laidback by nature, they may have difficulty tolerating extremely hyperactive dogs.

Is the Cesky Terrier a healthy breed?

I generally use my own males but have used another local breeder’s stock as well.I have imported dogs from Sweden and the Czech Republic with a view to getting diversity in my genetics.With the breed being relatively young and small in numbers there is not a lot of genetic diversity to be had.

How is the Cesky Terrier with children and other animals?

With good owners who are pack leaders and when also raised with them, Cesky Terriers can get along very well with children.They enjoy having play mates, can be energetic together, and love to explore things together too.Make sure children are taught how to play and stroke dogs in a kind and safe manner.With other pets it should be friendly too apart from when the animal is small and rodent like, which will be sure to trigger its prey instincts.It gets along well with other dogs being not as dog aggressive as other terriers.

Grooming ??

Cesky Terriers typically have the fur on their bodies clipped close to the skin, while the hair on their legs and beard is allowed to grow longer.Unlike many other Terriers, you never want to strip their fur; instead, trim it as desired.A haircut every six weeks or so should do it.

Last one… Any advice you would give to newcomers who would like to breed Cesky Terriers or just get involved in dog breeding?

With rare breeds, it is important to establish some good connections with successful breeders and gain their trust, advice, and support.This is not just a local effort but a global one.

How many litters are you having each year on average?

Currently, I have 15 adults in my kennel with 5 of them looking for retirement homes.I generally have 2 litters per year with a preference for whelping dates in January/February so the pups go home in the spring.

Exercise ??

Have you ever known someone who doesn’t spend much time at the gym but can get off the couch and immediately dominate whatever sport you’re playing? Cesky Terriers are like that.

Health Conditions ??

Overall, Cesky Terriers are a healthy breed so long as they’re properly cared for.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? ??

Cesky Terriers are excellent family pets.They’re patient with children, and they’re not big enough to knock them over accidentally.Also, they’re not prone to aggressiveness, so you shouldn’t have to worry about biting unless they’re threatened or abused.

I would like to see more conformity in breed standards around the world, using the FCI standard as the guide.In some non-FCI countries, the standard has been altered too much.The breed standard calls for a low tail set.With the foundation dog breeds being the Scottish Terrier and the Sealyham Terrier, I am not sure that we can maintain this attribute in our breed.A low tail set is very hard to find currently in the breed.

Where has the Cesky been hiding?

Since 1945 and this breeds Frankinstein-esque beginnings, the Cesky has become a favorite breed with farmers throughout the English speaking world.They are good with pets, good with sheep and good with people.

Cesky Terriers are fairly easy to train, as they’re incredibly smart.They should pick up on whatever you’re trying to teach them quickly, so you shouldn’t have any issue conveying the point of the exercise to them.

Your new pup will have a striking shape to his head and neck.He will have a long neck and like most other terriers, your Cesky will have big beard.

What will training look like?

Training a Cesky Terrier is going to take some patience, consistency, perseverance and a strong will.They can be difficult to train and this is where if you are experienced it will really help prepare you for what is needed.This dog has a mind of its own and needs their trainer and owner to be clearly in charge, to set rules they stick to and to keep it in check when it tries to manipulate you.Thankfully training this terrier is not as challenging as training other breeds of terrier but it still can be a tough dog so be firm.Use positive methods, offer it praise, encourage it and use treats to motivate.Make sure that along with basic obedience training you also ensure it starts socialization early on.It is important it is exposed to different sounds, places, animals, people and such.This will help make sure any caution it has does not turn to suspicion or aggression.It will also mean you are more able to trust it and that as it grows into an adult is is a happier and better adjusted dog.

What medical conditions are the most common with Ceskies and how can breeders work together to diminish them?

Dr.Horak, who developed the breed, was quite ruthless in his breeding program to establish the breed and as a result, we do not have many health issues to deal with.

Zlatapraha means “Golden Prague” in the Czech language.I acquired my first bitch (Zlata Kvitko) from the daughter of the geneticist who developed the breed.Her kennel is just outside of Prague.She suggested the kennel name building on the name of the girl that I was acquiring to begin my breeding program.

In 1949 Horak successfully created a new breed from these two terriers believing it would make a stronger hunting dog.

In 1949, Horak began a breeding program to create the ideal hunting dog and loyal family companion.

In 1963, the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) granted the breed official recognition.

In 1988 the Cesky Terrier Club of America was formed but progress was slow and in the early 1990s there were still only 150 dogs in the US.

In 2004, the American Cesky Terrier Fanciers Association formed and was recognized by the AKC, and finally, in mid-2011, the breed was accepted for entry in the AKC stud book, and able to compete in the Terrier group in the United States.
