Overview of Chorkies

Chorkie dogs are playful, demanding your attention at many times throughout the day. Luckily, both breeds are also loyal and loving—and frequently up for a cuddle—meaning that no matter what personality traits are dominant in your Chorkie, you can almost guarantee they will show you enough love to balance out all that attitude.

Chorkies are probably a lot like other mixes, in that a few of the problems that are peculiar to either breed of origin get “bred out.” That said, though, Chorkies haven’t been around that long, so you should be on the alert for conditions that might be common in the “parent breeds,” like allergies, heart problems and eye issues.

Chorkies are extremely high energy dogs and should be fed with a high-quality variety of dry kibble that can supplement all their nutritional needs. Provide them with ½ to 1 cup of high-quality dry kibble every day split into at least two or three meals.

Chorkie are known to piling on the pounds, so/however a diet that consists of biologically appropriate protein and healthy fats, ground bone and vegetables packed with the required vitamins and minerals is essential for optimum health and performance.

Chorkies have only been in existence since about 1990, and they probably gained most of their fame when Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie were carrying around dogs in ridiculously expensive purses, essentially using them as fashion accessories.

Chorkies are not recognized by the AKC or the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized by other clubs which include the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, American Kennel Club, Designer Breed Registry and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Chorkies come to life when a Yorkshire Terrier and a Chihuahua are cross-bred, a practice believed to have first been observed back in the 1990’s, back when small dogs started to greatly increase in popularity.

Chorkies love walking, but it will go through bursts of energy, and then all of a sudden get quiet and tired, which is why it’s recommended to carry the dog part of the way if going out for long walks.

The Chorkie is a tiny dog and measures about 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) in height and only about 8 to 15 lbs (3 to 7 kg) in weight.

Coat

A bath once a week or two is usually enough to keep them generally clean – excluding any messy incidents of course.The average Chorkie does not require a huge amount of grooming, but they can benefit from untangling and brushing on a daily basis, and haircuts every month or two, if they have a fairly long coat.

Their food should contain more amounts of calories in comparison to large dogs to provide balanced energy levels.

Grooming

Dental care is very important, as most Chorkies begin to suffer tooth loss due to periodontitis by three years of age.If introduced in puppyhood, this may be something a Chorkie will allow its owner to do at home, but many resent the procedure and may need to visit the veterinary clinic or grooming parlour to have this done.Owners should introduce the tooth brush to very young pups, and make brushing a part of the daily routine.
