Overview of Chorkies

  • Chorkie dogs are playful, demanding your attention at many times throughout the day. Luckily, both breeds are also loyal and loving—and frequently up for a cuddle—meaning that no matter what personality traits are dominant in your Chorkie, you can almost guarantee they will show you enough love to balance out all that attitude.
  • Chorkies are probably a lot like other mixes, in that a few of the problems that are peculiar to either breed of origin get “bred out.” That said, though, Chorkies haven’t been around that long, so you should be on the alert for conditions that might be common in the “parent breeds,” like allergies, heart problems and eye issues.
  • Chorkies are extremely high energy dogs and should be fed with a high-quality variety of dry kibble that can supplement all their nutritional needs. Provide them with ½ to 1 cup of high-quality dry kibble every day split into at least two or three meals.
  • Chorkie are known to piling on the pounds, so/however a diet that consists of biologically appropriate protein and healthy fats, ground bone and vegetables packed with the required vitamins and minerals is essential for optimum health and performance.
  • Chorkies have only been in existence since about 1990, and they probably gained most of their fame when Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie were carrying around dogs in ridiculously expensive purses, essentially using them as fashion accessories.
  • Chorkies are not recognized by the AKC or the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized by other clubs which include the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, American Kennel Club, Designer Breed Registry and the International Designer Canine Registry.
  • Chorkies come to life when a Yorkshire Terrier and a Chihuahua are cross-bred, a practice believed to have first been observed back in the 1990’s, back when small dogs started to greatly increase in popularity.
  • Chorkies love walking, but it will go through bursts of energy, and then all of a sudden get quiet and tired, which is why it’s recommended to carry the dog part of the way if going out for long walks.
  • Chorkie black puppy with curly wavey hair looks like a poodle puppy. What can I expect the puppy’s hair to look like full grown. All 5he puppies of this liter have very soft hair
  • The Chorkie is a tiny dog and measures about 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) in height and only about 8 to 15 lbs (3 to 7 kg) in weight.
  • Allergies

Chorkies are probably a lot like other mixes, in that some of the problems that are peculiar to either breed of origin get “bred out.” That said, though, Chorkies haven’t been around that long, so you should be on the alert for conditions that might be common in the “parent breeds,” like allergies, heart problems and eye issues. You don’t have to expect them, just know that they’re possible.

    Barking

Like any dog, early exposure to as many people, places, and other animals as possible can only help create a more well-rounded dog. Many Chorkies develop the Chihuahua habit of barking anytime they feel the need to alert their owners of “suspicious activity.” Along with the Yorkie’s fearlessness, these traits can combine to create an effective watchdog.

    Breed

And remember: a Chorkie is a mix, not a breed!Chorkies haven’t been around for all that long, and it’s hard to say whether their popularity will continue, or if they’re just a “flash in the pan” sort of trend.I’m going to tell you again that they’re really not worth the price breeders ask for them, but if you don’t mind spending money for a type of dog that once would have simply been given away, and you want an adorable little guy that will love you forever and amuse you like crazy, you’d probably do a lot worse than to choose a Chorkie.Just not one of those unfortunate little teacup things, okay? One thing is for sure, though, Chorkies can be very appealing little dogs – cute as the dickens, smart and playful. They’re also energetic and very affectionate.

    Coat

A bath once a week or two is usually enough to keep them generally clean – excluding any messy incidents of course. The average Chorkie does not require a huge amount of grooming, but they can benefit from untangling and brushing on a daily basis, and haircuts every month or two, if they have a fairly long coat.

    Energy

Their food should contain more amounts of calories in comparison to large dogs to provide balanced energy levels.

    Grooming

Dental care is very important, as most Chorkies begin to suffer tooth loss due to periodontitis by three years of age.If introduced in puppyhood, this may be something a Chorkie will allow its owner to do at home, but many resent the procedure and may need to visit the veterinary clinic or grooming parlour to have this done.Owners should introduce the tooth brush to very young pups, and make brushing a part of the daily routine.

    Health

If looking to buy a Chorkie puppy, it’s best to turn to reputable breeders rather the pet stores and puppy mills, as they are able to provide some health certificates that the parents were cleared for genetic diseases and were suitable for breeding.

    Life expectancy

As a cross between two breeds which are generally healthy and have a good life expectancy, most Chorkies should have a happy, healthy life.

    Obesity

A 20-minute walk, twice a day, and a play session indoors is all they need to stay in good shape. If this is still too much for you, then don’t get a Chorkie, as lack of movement can cause obesity and other health issues related to excess weight.

    Personality

    Social

Socialisation of young Chorkies is extremely important, providing positive experiences of meeting new people from puppyhood, and this must continue throughout life, by encouraging friends and visitors to the home to carry a small treat to reward good behaviour on their arrival.

They make great friends for older kids, and they’ll help ensure that grandma doesn’t get lonely now that she’s living alone. While they do require lots of love, attention, and training, all the work you put into caring for your Chorkie will result in a caring, obedient, and safe pet that your entire family is sure to appreciate.

    Are Chorkies Lapdogs?

You should know that Chorkies are not lapdogs. While adorable and small, they are also little bundles of energy. They have more enthusiasm than almost any other breed and will likely greet you at the door with hugs and kisses. If you give the dog enough energy, it will also like cuddling up with you for some loving too.

Are There Any Major Health Concerns with a Chorkie?

The Chorkie is considered to be a pretty healthy dog, and it hasn’t been around too long to develop any precise ailments associated with the breed. However, they may be sensitive to some of the issues that are common in their parental breeds. Some of these issues include patellar luxation, allergies, eye issues, and heart problems.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? ??

The Chorkie can be a good family dog, but they like to bark, chase, and nip, so they aren’t the best choice for families with very young children.Kids who can’t verbally speak commands or who are not comfortable with being a leader of the dog should be carefully supervised while spending time around a Chorkie.

    Can I train her easily?

She is a smart cookie so training is not too hard for in terms of intelligence and not understanding what you want from her.The problem could be that she has inherited some stubbornness and is deliberately not doing what you want her to do.They key to her training is establishing yourself clearly and firmly as her pack leader. She must know she is not the boss, you are.Be calm, fair, consistent.Use praise and treats to reward her when she does what she is supposed to.Avoid getting frustrated, she may be sensitive to harsh tones.Get it right and she will train fine, though you may need to work at first on housebreaking as they are prone to peeing where they want to even though they are meant to be house trained.

Chorkies generally get along with other dogs that aren’t aggressive by nature, but it’s a toss-up when it comes to getting along with other animals like cats.Chorkies tend to be jumpy and yappy, which is something most cats don’t want to hang around. But if this breed is introduced to other animals from the time when they are puppies, they should be able to adapt to a life shared with other dogs, cats, hamsters, or other pets.

    Exercise ??

This amazing little mixed breed loves to run and play, so they do a good job of exercising themselves most of the time. However, it’s important for Chorkies to get regular walks for brain stimulation and obedience reinforcement. The Chorkie doesn’t need a yard to play in, although they wouldn’t complain to have one.Exercise time can be completed indoors with the help of a ball for fetch, a puzzle toy, and a training instruction book or DVD.

    Food & Diet Requirements ??

Because of the small stature of this mixed breed, the Chorkie doesn’t need to eat a lot of food each day. However, they are pretty active so they should eat multiple small meals a day to keep up with their energy requirements.A cup or so of dry dog food should suffice when this breed is full-grown, give or take.
