    Breed

At this point in the history of the Spaniel, Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels were frequently born into the same litter.During this time Spaniels began to be classified as either Springer or Cocker Spaniel, based entirely on the size of the dog.In 1902 The Cocker Spaniel Club was founded in England. In 1946 the Cocker spaniels that had developed in America were recognized as a separate breed, the American Cocker Spaniel.Initially, they were divided into just two groups; water Spaniels and land Spaniels. It wasn’t until the 17th century that any distinction was made between types of land Spaniels.Spaniels, in general, are classified as a type of gun dog, but they have existed since long before the gun, initially bred to flush game out of the deep brush for the hunter and in some cases, to retrieve birds from the water. The change was so great that in 1935 a group was formed for those who preferred the traditional look of the English Cocker Spaniel and were intent on discouraging interbreeding between the original English Cocker Spaniel and the newer Americanized version of the Cocker Spaniel. The larger Spaniels, those that were over  were used to “spring” game animals for the hunt and were therefore called Springers, where the smaller dogs were particularly adept at flushing out birds like the woodcock for their owners, earning them the name of Cocker Spaniel. When the Cocker Spaniels began developing in America they changed considerably, their backs lengthened, their heads became more domed, and their prey drive was greatly reduced.

    Cancer

English Cocker Spaniels are also known to be more likely to develop mammary cancer than other dog breeds.

    Coat

English Cocker Spaniels are a bit taller than American Cocker Spaniels and typically have a roan-colored coat compared to the solid colors, such as tan, brown, black, or white, typically seen on an American Cocker Spaniels. The coat on an American Cocker Spaniel is generally longer than that of an English Cocker Spaniel. While English Cocker Spaniels and American Cocker Spaniels look very similar, there are a few key differences between the breeds.

    Dental Disease

English Cocker Spaniels also may have problems with their teeth that can progress to dental disease. When tartar builds up on their teeth and isn’t removed, it can lead to an infection in the roots of their teeth and their gums. You’ll want to be sure to brush your dog’s teeth regularly and schedule dental cleanings with their veterinarian.

    Energy

Brushing to remove tangles and prevent excessive shedding should be completed several times a week and bathing should occur every four to six weeks to prevent the odor from becoming too strong. It is also important to regularly check and clean this dog’s ears to prevent bacterial or fungal ear infections from developing. The English Cocker Spaniel is a people-oriented dog that is full of energy, and require larger than average amounts of both attention and exercise to be at their happiest and healthiest. The English Cocker Spaniel is an active and energetic animal that requires a great deal of maintenance, much of it in the form of exercise.Their beautiful, silky coats are prone to tangling, and the feathering on the ears and legs tend to collect leaves, sticks, and dirt that need to be picked or brushed out. They can also shed rather heavily and have a light but distinct doggy odor.

    Genetic Predispositions

At the end of the booklet, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Cocker looking and feeling her best. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for English Cocker Spaniels. This information helps you and us together plan for your pet’s unique medical needs. You will know what to watch for, and we will all feel better knowing that we’re taking the best possible care of your pal.

    Grooming

Whether you decide to bring home a working bred or show bred English Cocker Spaniel, you will need to commit to staying on top of their grooming needs.

    Health

Other health problems to be aware of in English Cocker Spaniels include patellar luxation and dilated cardiomyopathy, causing heart muscle failure and is particularly prevalent in solid-colored Cockers.

    Heart Disease

Early detection of heart disease often allows us to treat with medication that usually prolongs your pet’s life for many years.English Cocker Spaniels are prone to multiple types of heart disease, which can occur both early and later in life.Veterinary dental care and weight control go a long way in preventing heart disease. We’ll listen for heart murmurs and abnormal heart rhythms when we examine your pet. When indicated, we’ll perform an annual heart health check, which may include X-rays, an ECG, or an echocardiogram, depending on your dog’s risk factors.

    Infections

English Cocker Spaniels are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination, which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors.

    Life expectancy

However, they are prone to have diseases like skin disorders, cardiovascular disorder, immunological disorders, and infectious conditions. Not every breed are born healthy. The English Cocker Spaniel has an average life expectancy of 10-12 years. The health issues depend upon factors like genetics and raising.

    Obesity

Aside from obesity, the most common health issues for English cocker spaniels include progressive retinal atrophy, renal failure, and hip dysplasia. But that doesn’t mean your pup will develop these conditions. With an eye towards a good diet, regular exercise, and regular checkups, you can help keep your dog happy and healthy.

American Cockers are smaller with longer coats, and quite distinct faces.Cockers also contribute a wide variety of fur colours and coat patterns to their Cockapoo descendants. For example, Cockers can look dramatically different depending on whether they are working or show lines of dog, or if they are an American Cocker Spaniel or an English Cocker Spaniel.Much like the differences in show and working Springers, show Cockers have longer ears and feathers and domed heads. The difference between American and English Cocker Spaniels will also impact the look and temperament of the puppies. The most noticeable difference between the two is that English Cockers are larger and have longer muzzles.Working Cockers are longer in the muzzle, leg and body, and have shorter ears that are set higher on their head.

    Training

Although similar to the American Cocker Spaniel in general overall traits, the English Cocker has more of a working dog background.Commonly English Cocker Spaniels are quite food motivated, which makes learning and training easier, especially teaching the dog to relinquish rather than retrieve or guard items not intended for play.English Cocker Spaniels are characterized as being intelligent, playful, happy, and usually friendly dogs, although some can have a high amount of energy.Reward-based training also helps to minimize the fearful behaviors occasionally seen in English Cocker Spaniels.
