The Flat-Coated Retriever is a “natural” breed and enjoys partaking in “natural” activities which include rolling in feces, playing in mud, and digging.[3] These dogs are also “thinking” dogs, meaning they want to please but look for a way to bend the rules.[3] This characteristic helps with their hunting ability but only if they are bonded with their owner.

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an active, multitalented bird dog with a strong desire to please people.[3] Exuberant, confident, and outgoing, they make a loving family pet and can be companions to small children, provided adults are nearby to direct this dog’s boisterous enthusiasm.

History of Flat-Coated Retrievers

In 1903, the Verein Deutsche Wachtelhund (VDW) or German Wachtelhund Club was established.

In 1910, the VDW implemented its breed standard by selecting eleven Wachtelhunds, four males and seven females.

In 1911, England’s Kennel Club began classifying these dogs as Retriever – Yellow or Golden, and then in 1920, the name was officially changed to Retriever – Golden.

In 1911, the Kennel Club in England recognized them as an official breed, and in 1920 they switched the name from Retriever, Golden or Yellow, to Golden Retriever.

In 1911, yellow flat-coat fanciers split this breed off from the flat-coat in the UK, but it wasn’t until 1925 that they were split off in the US.

In 1930 the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club.

In 1960 the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America formed to help save the breed.
