Grooming ??

Grooming your Hovawart is important since their double-layered coats are long and can snarl easily.They’ll need to be brushed at least once every two to three days to remove matted fur and debris, but this will help reduce some shedding.An occasional bath is fine every once in a while, but over-bathing can lead to dry, itchy skin.Your Hovawart will also need to have its nails trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks or as needed, which should be done by a professional until you’re comfortable doing it at home.

Health and Conditions ??

Hovawarts are known for being very hardy, healthy dogs that suffer from very few health conditions.This is due to extremely careful and selective breeding since these dogs need to be in prime condition to work in the fields.Most of the health problems listed are common with other large dogs, so the chances of any inherited conditions are on the lower end.

How active is the Hovawart?

Being a working dog the Hovawart is an active breed and it needs active owners.It is happiest when it is kept as a working dog as well as a companion as it needs to be kept busy.Along with enough physical exercise it also need plenty of mental stimulation.It also enjoys things like agility trials or other work that has it working alongside its owner.Make sure if it is not already active all day that it then gets at least an hour to two of vigorous exercise a day.That includes walks, training and physical play with you.It would also happily join you for hikes, runs and jogs and it should get regular off leash time somewhere safe.If it does not get what it needs it will be hard to live with, destructive, more stubborn and hyper.

How is the Hovawart with other animals and children?

Around children when it has been well socialized, trained and especially if raised with them it is affectionate, playful and gets along well with them.It can also get along fine with other pets if this is the case though with strange small animals it may see them as prey.With other dogs there can be territorial issues particularly if both dogs are of the same sex and have not been neutered.

Where Did the Hovawart Breed Originate?

Originally, the Hovawart breed was celebrated for its ability to ward off robbers, wolves, and other intruders on farms throughout the German countryside.It was a highly respected breed in Medieval times, and integral to the agricultural economy.Since it was mentioned in medieval German law and was already famous enough to be described as one of the “Five Noble Breeds” in 1473, it is safe to say that the Hovawart had been around in Germany even farther back than the 1400s.

In 1210, during the siege of the Ordensritterburg fortress, the owners entrusted the life of their little heir to their pet.

In 1210,  the castle of Ordensritterburg was captured by the Slavs, and all the inhabitants were killed, except for the noble’s infant son.

In 1915, a group of enthusiasts decided to try and save the Hovawart dog breed.
