Keeshonden are generally healthy, but may suffer Canine Hip Dysplasia, cataracts, epilepsy, Addison’s Disease, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella (dislocation of the knee cap), eye problems, and skin problems.

Keeshonden typically have dark brown eyes and distinctive spectacles—dark line markings slanting from the outer corner of each eye that make it look as if they're wearing glasses.

Keeshonds, Pulis, Cairn Terriers, Miniature Pinschers, Poodles, Samoyeds, Australian Terriers, Schnauzers, Spitz, Fox Terriers, Bichon Frise, and Siberian Huskies may be at higher risk.

Keeshonds are well-known for their dense, long, fluffy coats that comprise of three layers: a thick double top coat, a wooly undercoat, and a long outer coat.

The Keeshond is named after Cornelis “Kees” de Gyselaer, the leader of the Dutch rebels who rose up against the House of Orange in the late 18th century.

Allergies
