Overview of Kooikerhondjes

The Kooikerhondje is also known as Kooiker Dog, Dutch Decoy Spaniel and Dutch Decoy Dog.Originally from the Netherlands,this breed has existed since the 16th century.The Kooikerhondje was bred as a tolling dog and used to chase ducks into nets.After WW2, this breed nearly faced extinction due to the dwindling duck population.Today this breed is popular in Holland  but is still difficult to find elsewhere.

Kooikerhondje Dogs eyes have a special membrane for seeing better at night, called a tapetum lucidum – a dogs reflective layer in the choroid chiefly of nocturnal, causing the eyes to glow when light at night hits the eyes and they consist of a few layers of smooth flat cells covered by a section of double deformed crystals.CareKooikerhondje dogs were bred to be hunting dogs.

The Kooikerhondje is a friendly, even-tempered dog who is eager to please.  They are self-confident, and alert making them a good watchdog.  Originally bred to lure ducks into enclosures and kill vermin they have a strong prey drive which might make them unsuitable for owners who also have small pocket pets.

Kooikerhondjes can be traced back to the Netherlands into the Middle Ages, most notably as subjects in paintings by Dutch master artists Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and Jan Steen.

Coat

Kooikerhondjes are medium-sized dogs that resemble spaniels.Regular brushing will suffice.The coat of a kooikerhondje is medium in length, and the hair is feathered on the backs of the legs, chest, ears, abdomen and tail.The color is usually red and white.The hair on the ears, which hang downward, is red with black tips that are referred to as earrings.The Kooikerhondje is a small dog breed with square proportions with a small head but long muzzles.The white tail is largely plumed and hangs downward with an upward curve at the tip.Their coats are shiny, soft and medium-length.Their ears are medium-sized, pendant and have wispy tips.They are usually bicolor and coats that are easy to keep clean.They stand at an average height of 14 to 17 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh 20 to 40 pounds.

Exercise ??

Though of medium-small build, the Kooikerhondje is an active dog and needs quite a bit of exercise.For this reason, we do not recommend this breed to apartment dwellers.Your dog will need multiple one-hour long (or longer) occasions throughout the day to go outside and exercise.

History of Kooikerhondjes

In 1971, the Dutch Raad van Beheer (similar to the AKC) granted recognition to the Kooikerhondje breed.

In 1939 Baroness Van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol decided to resurrect the little Kooikerhondje.

In 1943 Baroness von Hardenbrock van Ammerstol began the arduous task of reviving the breed.

In 1943 Tommie had her second litter from a new dog—named Bennie.

In 1945 during World War II, many Hungarians fled the Russian occupation, taking their vizslas with them.

In 1966 the Dutch Kennel Club 'Raad van Beheer' adopted the interim breed and in the Kooikerhondje breed was officially recognized in 1971.

In 1966 the raad van Beheer (the Dutch institute that decides whether a breed can become officially recognized or not) decided that a provisional register could be installed.
