Labradoodles/Goldendoodles originally started out with great intentions- to create a hypoallergenic family dog that could also serve as a therapy dog due to the normally well-balanced nature of Labradors/Golden Retrievers, the Poodle’s high intelligent and hypoallergenic coat, and the adaptability, trainability, and versatility of all the breeds.

Labradoodles’ hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be straight, wavy, or curly.[8][e] a few Labradoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less and has less “dog odor” than that of a Labrador retriever.[8] Regular haircuts, bathing and brushing are necessary to maintaining a healthy coat.

Allergies

However, the Labradoodle became better known in 1988, when Australian breeder Wally Conron crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle at Guide Dogs Victoria. Conron’s aim was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and train-ability of the Labrador, and to provide a guide dog suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander. The first known use of the term “Labradoodle” was by Sir Donald Campbell to describe his Labrador/Poodle cross dog in his 1955 book, “Into the Water Barrier”.

Barking

Even if they do bark, they are smart enough to be trained out of this habit easily.Labradoodles are considered to be moderate when it comes to barking.

Dividing your Labradoodle’s food into two or more meals per day instead of a big bowl once a day can also lower their risk of gastric torsion, also known as bloat.The Labrador Retriever can suffer from this condition, and it’s a trait that can be easily passed on to any Labradoodle offspring.

Breed

Cancer

Labradoodles may also have a tendency towards hypothyroidism and Addison’s disease, while Goldendoodles can be more likely to develop skin conditions, epilepsy, or cancer.

Coat

In the late 1980’s, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, the two founders of the Australian Labradoodle as we know it today, began infusing several other breeds into early generations of their Lab/Poodle crosses, in an attempt to improve temperament, coat, confirmation, and size.  The infused breeds included Irish Water Spaniel as well as the American and English Cocker Spaniel.  The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition.
