Overview of Mudis

Mudis can be aggressive to other dogs if they are not socialized, but a properly trained Mudi should have no problem with other pets, though they prefer to have lots of personal attention from their humans, so it might be best if they are in a home with only a number of other animals at most.

Mudi dogs that are brindle, red merle, black and tan, and yellow with a black mask are not currently accepted as part of the current FCI (Federation Cynologique International) breed standard, according to the Mudi Club of America (MCA).

Mudis are quite rare outside of Hungary, but if you are interested in adopting a Mudi, you can try contacting Mudi Club of America, which lists Mudis in need of homes on their website when they find dogs that are available.

Mudis are not overly trusting of strangers, either, so if kids have playmates over, it may be best if the resident Mudi is allowed to maintain a distance until they are used to the presence of a new human in the home.

The Mudi is a working dog, and you’ll find most of them on farms in Hungary where they continue to herd up to 500 sheep, guard the property, and rid the farm of small vermin like rats and mice.

Mudis are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities (a condition called hemivertebrae), which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability.

Mudis will especially enjoy the opportunity to run and play in an open area, but make sure that it’s safely enclosed so that they do not take off after any interesting scent.

The Mudi is a great family dog for an experienced trainer, but they require an owner who knows how to be a pack leader and can provide plenty of exercise.

The Mudi is a pleasure to train because it’s always eager to please and excited to learn new tricks.They learn very quickly and can commit new tricks to memory in just a few sessions.Positive reinforcement in the form of praise and treats will keep them interested have in holding your sessions at the same time each day will get them locked into a schedule that they come to expect, and they will be ready and waiting each day.

How active is the Mudi?

Mudik are active dogs and needs a lot of physical exercise each day but their mental stimulation should also be done daily too.It needs to be with active owners, and preferably kept as a working dog as that is what it loves to do.Without that it should have something else fill that gap like training in a doggy sport.Though it is on the small side it is best in rural areas in homes with a yard that is secure rather than an apartment.Its barking could also be a problem in close living situations.Take it for two long walks a day, play with it daily, give it opportunities to be safely off leash on a regular basis.If a Mudi does not get enough activity it can become difficult to live with, destructive and get into a lot of trouble.Be prepared that it does love to dig so a place where it is fine for it to do so in the yard is a good idea.
