I normally try to write thoughtful, provocative posts that might interest any pet lover, rather than fill up the blog with my own personal tantrums.I'm also drowning in deadline pressure right now, and so this post? It's eating into time I should be spending with my mom on Mother's Day tomorrow.So let me try to keep it brief.I was researching something, and saw a mention on a dog training forum to the "no-nonsense, honest" advice to be found on a dog breed website I'd never heard of.I'm all about the no-nonsense honesty, so I headed over to check it out.(I'm not going to link because the site is, of course, selling things — which amazingly are the very things that will fix the problems its author identifies in her breed profiles.Imagine that.)
As I always do, I clicked on the description of the breed about which I know the most, the Scottish Deerhound.Which is when I discovered that the author might be honest and she might be a no-nonsense kind of gal, but "accurate" doesn't appear to be on any list of applicable adjectives.One of the biggest drawbacks she lists for the deerhound is that they're hard to housebreak and require four to six months of rigorous crate-training in order to accomplish this miraculous fete.Huh? In the last 27 years I've had dozens of Scottish Deerhounds, as has my mom, and we've never had the slightest trouble housebreaking any of them.I've never known anyone who had particular trouble housebreaking a deerhound, and as far as I can remember, I've never seen a single discussion about housebreaking come up on Deerhound-L, ever — and I joined that list the day it was created.In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the list owner once told me I was the first person to join it.She also went on and on about how "sensitive" deerhounds are to emotional and family discord.Deerhounds are sensitive, in a way, but they mostly sleep through stuff.Frankly, while I've had a few clingy hounds, they're pretty much oblivious to family fights, bouts of sobbing, and life's more soap opera-ish moments.So again…fail.Believe me, deerhounds have issues.They're not for everyone.In fact, they're the right breed for almost no one.And some of the pluses and minuses she lists for the breed are on target, although it tends to be the kinds of things the deerhound shares with other sighthounds, like their incredible drive to chase things, or with other giant breeds, like certain health problems or the fact they can easily knock someone down.The problem, I think, is that it's not possible to be an expert on every dog breed, or even every kind of dog.I don't care if you're an all-breed AKC judge, an obedience trainer, or even a pet writer like me.The people who really know a given breed are the people who live with and raise these dogs, who breed them or foster them or rescue them.Experience with a single dog can't tell you about an entire breed anymore than knowing a set of facts about a type or group of dogs will tell you about an individual animal.So if you're out there looking for information on a specific dog breed, don't take the word of an all-breed expert.Expose yourself to a wide variety of opinions from all kinds of people who have owned, bred, raised, trained, and lived with that dog breed for many years.Email lists and internet forums are great places to get to know those often-elusive people, particularly if the breed in which you're interested in somewhat rare.(If you want to know what life is like with, say, a Labrador Retriever, just head for the local dog park and give it ten minutes.)
Go to a dog show and start hanging out ringside, and see if some nice person will adopt you.See the dogs in their home environments, and most of all, talk to people who have known many dogs of that breed, not just one or two.And above all, don't take the word of someone who wants to sell you something, whether it's a book, a supplement, or a puppy.
