The Stabyhoun is a Dutch breed native to Newfoundland, and while they’re popular in their home country, many sources, including the American Kennel Club, recognize the Stabyhoun as one of the rarest dog breeds in the world.

Stabyhouns were often bred with Wetterhouns, a Frisian water dog, but the practice ceased when the Stabyhoun gained official recognition as a breed in Holland on October 10, 1942.

History of Stabyhouns

In 1938 a group of people who fancied the Stabyhoun became a part of the Kynologenclub Friesland and began the process of purifying the Stabyhoun.

In 1942 the breed was officially acknowledged and since then crossbreeding between the two has stopped.

In 1942, the Dutch Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

In 1942, the Stabyhoun was officially recognized by the Kynologenclub Friesland.

In 1947 the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabij-enWetterhounen (NVSW), which translates to The Dutch Staby and Wetterhoun Association, was formed.

In 2006, the American Kennel Club welcomed the stabyhoun into their foundation stock service program, which is the step that enables breeders to pave the way for full official breed recognition.

In 2010, the ASA had seventy-eight members; the organization is planning its First Continental Stabyhoun Specialty, to be held July 12-15, 2013.

In 2012 these lovely dogs were brought to the UK where the UK Stabyhoun association was formed in order to preserve this rare breed.

In 2012, a programme to introduce the Stabyhoun to the UK was launched by the UK Stabyhoun Association.

In 2017, it was thought there were only around 7,000 registered around the globe.
