Overview of Stabyhouns
Breed
The Stabyhoun originated in a northern province of the Netherlands known as Friesland prior to 1800. The dog is probably an ancestor of dogs brought into the Netherlands by Spanish conquistadors. While it was frequently bred with the Wetterhoun, that crossbreeding ended after 1942 when the breed was officially recognized.
Cancer
Having a healthy lifestyle could help lower the chances of these illnesses occurring in your Stabij.Stabyhouns can develop non-particular cancer or arthritis in their old age.We recommend regular visits to the vet throughout their life to identify any issues early.
Coat
In fact, Ms.Marjolein Roosendaal is a geneticist for the NVSW.Ms.One focus of Ms.Roosendaal and the NVSW are working to preserve the blue mold or blue roan coat coloring in future generations of Stabyhouns.Roosendaal has written a book called Stabij, Bijke in All Respects, offered through the NVSW website, containing both historical and modern breed information.Roosendaal’s work for the NVSW, is the occurrence of certain coat colors in the breed, such as the orange and white coat coloring, which is almost extinct in Stabyhouns. She began showing Stabyhouns in 1989 and later began breeding them, and is one of the owners of Eenhoornleijn Kennel, located in southwestern Friesland. She is an advocate of what is called “blue mold” coloring in the breed which occurs when the coat is a blue roan (white and black hairs mixed together in equal amounts, creating a blue cast to the coat). This coat color was listed in the first breed standard, but is no longer, although Stabyhouns with this color are acceptable. While the majority of Stabyhouns are black and white, brown and white breed specimens are found only in the Netherlands.
Energy
Jobs can include guarding your yard, hunting, agility, flyball, and any other active dog sports. They inherit a desire to work from their ancestors who were bred for hunting and tracking, so providing your Stabyhoun with a job to do will help get their energy out in a fun and exciting way.
Grooming
Health
Because there are more and more Stabyhouns outside of the Netherlands, however, there may be health concerns beyond the hips to watch out for.The rarity of the dog has also helped maintain the high health profile. The Stabyhoun is a very healthy breed owing to the careful management of the dogs and their admittance to the Dutch Association for Stabyhouns and Wetterhouns. The strict rules regarding hip tests has helped keep this strong breed intact and are what contribute to the dog’s amazing endurance.
Life expectancy
Stabyhouns are a very hardy breed with very few genetic issues. Their average life expectancy is about 13 to 14 years.
Personality
Stabyhouns are dogs with both a soft-mouthed retriever and pointer personality and are particularly used for hunting ducks and upland birds.
Social
In addition to giving your dog adequate attention and involvement with your activities, you will need to socialize your puppy properly, to prevent your Stabyhoun from developing separation anxiety. Stabyhouns want your attention and hate to be left alone. They are sometimes called “Velcro” dogs because they want to follow you everywhere.
Temperament
The Stabyhoun temperament is best described as a family companion that can hunt — meaning they may not be the best of hunting dogs but are competent when they aren’t being stubborn. This breed loves hunting, retrieving and playing in the water. When in a domestic setting, this is a mild-mannered dog; once in the field or woods for play or sport, they are very energetic.
Training
